Protein gets talked about everywhere - at the gym, on food labels and across nutrition advice. But behind every protein are smaller building blocks called amino acids.
There are 20 amino acids commonly used by the human body to build proteins. Nine of them are known as essential amino acids because the body cannot produce enough of them on its own. That means they need to come from the food we eat.
So, what are these nine essential amino acids, and what do they actually do?
1. Histidine
Histidine is involved in the growth and maintenance of body tissues. It is also used by the body to produce histamine, a compound involved in several normal functions including immune responses and digestion.
2. Isoleucine
Isoleucine is one of the three branched-chain amino acids, commonly called BCAAs.
It is involved in muscle metabolism and also plays a role in the way the body uses energy.
3. Leucine
Leucine is another BCAA and is probably one of the most talked-about amino acids in sports nutrition.
It plays an important role in signalling the processes involved in muscle protein synthesis — essentially the process through which the body builds and repairs muscle proteins.
4. Lysine
Lysine is involved in protein production and several other processes within the body.
It also contributes to the formation of collagen and helps support the body's normal use of calcium.
5. Methionine
Methionine is a sulphur-containing amino acid.
The body uses it in a number of metabolic processes, and it also acts as a starting material for other compounds the body needs.
6. Phenylalanine
Phenylalanine is used to produce another amino acid called tyrosine.
Tyrosine can then be used in the production of several important compounds in the body, including certain neurotransmitters.
7. Threonine
Threonine plays a role in the structure of several proteins in the body.
It is found in proteins such as collagen and elastin and contributes to normal protein metabolism.
8. Tryptophan
You may have heard of tryptophan because of its connection with serotonin.
The body can use tryptophan to produce serotonin and melatonin, compounds involved in functions such as mood and the sleep-wake cycle.
9. Valine
Valine is the third member of the BCAA family alongside leucine and isoleucine.
Like the other BCAAs, it participates in muscle metabolism and energy-related processes in the body.
Where Do Essential Amino Acids Come From?
Essential amino acids are found in many everyday foods.
Animal-based protein sources such as eggs, dairy, fish and meat generally contain all nine essential amino acids.
There are plant-based sources too. Foods such as soy, dals, legumes, grains, millets, nuts and seeds can all contribute amino acids to your daily diet.
Some foods are described as complete proteins because they provide all nine essential amino acids in suitable proportions.
But that doesn't mean every individual meal needs to contain the perfect amino acid combination. Eating a varied diet containing different protein sources throughout the day can help provide the amino acids your body requires.
And What Exactly Are BCAAs?

They're especially well known in the fitness world because of their involvement in muscle protein metabolism, but they are only three of the nine essential amino acids.

Essential Doesn't Mean Complicated
Amino acids might sound like something that belongs in a chemistry textbook, but they're part of foods people eat every day.
The bigger lesson is simple: protein quality and variety matter.
Rather than obsessing over individual nutrients, focus on building a varied diet with good sources of protein alongside grains, vegetables, fruits and other whole foods.
